Social media are interactive computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks.

ExxonMobil wanted to use Social Media as a platform to engage employees from Offshore.

The target group is internal comprising regular employees and hat contractors. The plan is to provide access in 2 phases…initial/pilot phase for regular employees only and subsequently to hat contractors.

One of my 1st assesments as an inten is to create a Facebook group for ExxonMobil employeees in offshore.

The  objectives that was hoped to achieve is that the Access to communication is very limited today affecting the internal communication efforts and leadership engagement opportunities due to barriers in location, work schedule and our strict IT governance which impact accessibility to communication channels.

Communication channels accessible to employees today:

  • Email via pool desktops on platform. The desktops are used primarily by offshore employees to meet job requirements, ie: paperwork, administrative duties, reporting, etc. Since the priority is for administrative work, not many employees are motivated to queue up after work to use the desktops for office engagement/communication purposes.

  • Yammer with access via pool desktops or company issued device (ipad/handphone/laptop) which majority of our offshore employees do not have, especially non-MPT. Yammer is not accessible through personal device due to single sign-in IT protocol.

  • Digital screen which runs posters/slides or video without sound (using subtitles) and non-interactive.

  • Printed materials.

Additonal challenges/opportunities includes

Offshore employees are allowed to bring their personal mobile device offshore for after work use in designated areas; which provide alternative communication channels for them to occupy their time with after work. While this create competition for attention (external contents VS company contents), it also provides opportunity for us to engage with them through external public channel such as Facebook, as this will make our communication effort accessible to them conveniently (not restricted to pool desktops/company issued device only, desktop queue, etc). Leveraging on public channel such as FB will also enable us to connect/engage with the employees seamlessly when they are off duty (28/28 rotation).

more over Exxon also  recently signed a 3-year Collective Agreement (CA) with the employee union (representing non-MPT employees) which carries specific mandates that are key to EMEPMI’s success going forward. they plan to launch a communication campaign to build understanding on the CA intent and mandates among impacted employees (offshore leadership team, supervisors and non MPT). they need to ensure all communication efforts/materials produced are accessible by all offshore employees and the communication channels enable interactivity/2-way communication to be effective.

I was given an assessment to Creat a Facebook Group page as well a Facebook profile to initially launch the Facebook group,

Including working on :

- content writing,

- morning greetings,

- launch video script,

- event pictures,

- rule and regulation of the group

- reposting events from Yammer

NOTE:

However the project of launching Facebook was terminated on September 2019, due to the discussion of ExxonMobil planning to sell of its Malaysian Assets.
